Our Story

Sleepy Owl Dentistry was founded in 2020 by pediatric dentist Dr. Eric Vieth. After recognizing the immense need for sedation dentistry options for children in South Carolina, Dr. Vieth decided to open Sleepy Owl Dentistry to help meet the needs of these children and their families. We provide IV sedation dentistry for pediatric patients with extensive dental needs that are unable to sit through a dental procedure in a typical setting, keeping them free from stress and fear. All treatment is completed in a single appointment. Some of the procedures that we perform include x-rays, fillings, crown placement (both stainless steel and white), pulpotomies, extractions, placing space maintainers, and sealants.

New Patients

If your child requires IV sedation dentistry services, your dentist will send us a referral. If you are interested in this service for your child and were not referred, please contact our office and we will be happy to go over options and contact your dentist for the treatment plan needed to ensure that Sleepy Owl Dentistry is the right fit for your child.

Once we receive the referral we will contact you via phone within 1 business day to discuss the process, answer any questions that you may have, and begin the scheduling process.

Happy Children

Prior to scheduling, we require that all of our patients are cleared for sedation by their pediatrician. We have a one-page history & physical (H&P) form that the pediatrician should complete. We will send you this form to bring to your pediatrician for completion, or our office can fax it directly to your pediatrician office if you prefer. Once the form is completed, please send us a copy of the form or ask your pediatrician to fax it to our office.

We will then contact you to officially schedule your child's appointment. We will add your child to the day for surgery, and call a week prior to confirm the time of the appointment. We schedule surgeries starting with an arrival of 6:45am until 1:15pm.

What to Expect

On the day of your child's scheduled appointment, your child will have a consultation with Dr. Eric and we will perform their dental work on the same day - so only one trip to our office should be needed!

As your child wakes up more and is safe to discharge (usually about 30 minutes), we will assist your child to your vehicle to head home.

icon-park-solid_check-one.png

You and your child will be brought to a pre-op room where Dr Eric will discuss the treatment plan, discuss the procedure, and go over any questions that you may have. Our anesthesiologist will then meet with you and your child, go over their medical history, listen to their heart and lungs and ensure we have the correct information and discuss the anesthesiology process.

icon-park-solid_check-one.png

Your child will then be given an injection into their arm which will calm them, allowing the anesthesiologist to place an IV to begin the procedure. Your child will be given the injection while with you, and once they are 'asleep' they will be taken to the OR by our team. Parents, or guardians, will return to the lobby during the procedure and will be provided updates by our team.

icon-park-solid_check-one.png

Once your child is asleep and being monitored by our anesthesiology team, we may perform new x-rays, to ensure that any dental work your child needs is completed at this appointment. If the treatment plan is varied than what was originally anticipated prior to the x-rays or detailed exam, a member of the clinical team will come to the lobby to discuss this with you.

icon-park-solid_check-one.png

After the procedure is complete, your child will move to a recovery room where you will be brought back to their side as they wake up. A member of the clinical team will be present with you to monitor your child as they wake up and to discuss discharge instructions. The dentist will come in and discuss the treatment performed.

Things to Note:

While we strive to ensure that patients are seen as close to their scheduled appointment time, we run on a surgery schedule and occasionally we do run behind. Our team will do our best to keep you informed as much as possible should we run into delays. The entire process from check-in to discharge can take 2-3 hours, so please ensure you do not have any conflicts on the day of your child's appointment. If a school or work note is needed, our team will be happy to provide these to you.

We ask that arrangements be made for siblings or other children on the day of the appointment when possible.

The parent, or legal guardian, must remain on-site at our office during the entire duration of the procedure.

Pre-Op Instructions

To ensure your child's safety during sedation, please follow these instructions strictly. Failure to do so may require us to reschedule your appointment.

Patients must not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before their procedure. If your child eats or drinks on the day of their appointment, we will have to reschedule for safety reasons.

Please have your child dressed comfortably with a short sleeve shirt and be sure to bring a change of clothes just in case of any accidents.

Children are welcome to bring a toy, blanket, or lovey that makes them feel more comfortable to their appointment.

Patients should be healthy on the day of surgery and free from any respiratory illness for at least 4 weeks prior to their appointment.

Please complete paperwork electronically prior to your child's appointment if possible. If you have any questions regarding the paperwork or need the link to complete it resent, please contact our office.
If the legal guardian is someone other than the biological or adoptive parent, please ensure our office has a copy of that documentation prior to the surgery date.

Two adults should be present on the day of the surgery. Please contact our office if you are not able to have two adults present and we can go over possible options to keep your child's appointment. Consents will need to be signed on the day of surgery by the parent or legal guardian.

Discharge Instructions

You will be provided a printed copy of discharge instructions at the appointment and our clinical staff will go over these in more detail and answer any questions that you may have.

If you have any questions, you can contact the dentist or anesthesiologist -- we are here for you!

Happy Children

01

Do not return child to school the day of the appointment and refrain from any strenuous activity.

02

Your child must be carefully observed by a responsible adult for the remainder of the day. Activity should be limited to watching TV, playing quietly with toys, or resting.

03

If your child would like to take a nap, that is OK. Have them lay on their side or stomach with their head turned to the side.

04

Fluid intake is very important for pediatric patients. After your child is awake and alert, encourage as much fluid as possible.

05

You may begin to introduce soft food to eat once home, for example things like applesauce, pasta, or mashed potatoes. Today is a great day for a treat too -- like popsicles or ice cream! Avoid crunchy or sticky foods. Move to a routine diet as your child feels up to it.

06

Your child's mouth will be sore for 24-48 hours after surgery. Alternating Ibuprofen and Tylenol is the most effective way to alleviate their discomfort. Follow dosing recommendations on the label as needed for pain.

07

In areas where crowns are placed, it is normal to see some bleeding at the gum line. This will heal over the next few days.

08

If your child had any extractions, they will have gauze placed at the end of surgery. Bleeding will be pretty well stopped but you may continue to see some over the next few hours.

09

Local anesthesia may be used if extractions are performed. If used, the area of the extraction may be numb for about 2 hours. Monitor that your child does not bite, chew, or suck on their lips as they can hurt themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the most common questions about safety, insurance, and recovery.

  • We accept all major dental insurances. We are in-network with South Carolina Medicaid. We are out-of-network with all private insurance providers. However, we do file all dental treatment claims to those insurance providers and provide reimbursement documents to each primary subscriber to file a claim for reimbursement for the anesthesia fee.

  • If you have a copayment or deductible through your insurance, we will communicate that prior to scheduling your appointment. Payment is expected at the time of scheduling, however, we do work with TuaPay™ for financing should you need assistance with a payment plan for the balance.

  • Both dentist, facility, and anesthesiologist fees are all billed through our office. You will not receive separate bills for the dental treatment and anesthesia.

  • Prior to your child's appointment, the history and physical (H&P) exam form must be completed by your child's pediatrician. Please note that if your child has not been seen by their pediatrician within 90 days of their appointment, a new physical exam will be required prior to their appointment.

Some pediatricians will require a visit to be seen for the form to be completed regardless of the last time your child was seen -- this will be at the discretion of your pediatrician.

  • As this is considered dental surgery, we typically expect families to be on-site for 2-3 hours for their appointment, from checking in at the front desk to leaving our office after recovery. We do run on a 'surgical schedule' and appreciate your patience, as we strive to ensure that every child is given the attention that they need and as a result, occasionally cases will take longer than typical.

  • Children should not return to daycare or school after their appointment. They should be monitored by a responsible adult for the remainder of the day and should be allowed to relax. Most children should feel well enough to return to school or daycare the day following their appointment.

  • No - we treat our operatory room just like an operating room at a surgery center or hospital, only the clinical staff is in the room during the actual procedure but the parents will be in the room when the child goes to sleep and wakes up.

  • No, we will complete the consultation and treatment on the same day. If you would like a phone consultation with Dr. Eric prior to your child's appointment to discuss your child's dental treatment needs, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office so we can coordinate this for you.

  • We require that at least one parent or legal guardian is on-site during your child's appointment.

  • We ask that two adults be at the appointment with each child so that following their procedure, one parent is able to assist the child during the drive home and monitor the child, while the other adult is able to drive and focus on the road.

Accessible Care for Every Child

We believe finances shouldn't stand in the way of a healthy smile. From accepting Medicaid to offering flexible payment plans, we are committed to finding a solution that fits your family's budget.

Happy Children
Commercial Insurance

We are currently not in-network with any commercial insurance plans, however, we will file the dental treatment claim to your dental treatment claim to your dental insurance provider for you. As an out-of-network provider, we are not only able to keep our fees at lower levels, but most importantly, we are able to provide the best possible care for our patients and not let insurance dictate treatment.

Prior to scheduling your appointment, we will provide you with an estimated treatment plan to give you an idea of what you will be expected to pay upon scheduling.  The final treatment plan may change so any difference will be due on the appointment date or refunded.

After your child's appointment, we will also provide the forms necessary and information in order for you to file a claim for reimbursement with your dental insurance provider for the anesthesia fee.

Reimbursement is not guaranteed, but we do help you with
the claim.

If you are interested in filing a claim for reimbursement with your medical insurance provider, please contact your medical insurer directly to inquire about which forms need to be completed and we are happy to assist you with the completion of those. We do partner with third-party vendors for payment plans, please see our page on Financing options, or reach out to our team with any questions.

Happy Children
Medicaid

At Sleepy Owl Dentistry, we believe that everyone should have access to quality dental care. Our mission is to provide care to all children, regardless of payment method.

We are proud to serve children covered by Medicaid plans at all of our locations. We understand how difficult it can be to access quality dental care for kids, and we strive to make it easier for families to get the care they need.

We use the safest techniques with IV anesthesia including all the standard hospital based equipment and monitors. Your patients will be free from any stress or fear of the dentist when they return to you for future recall appointments and preventive care.

For any patients over 8 years old, we require that they have very extensive dental needs or special needs that make IV sedation necessary.
